Today, his name is being scrubbed from active political life as part of an aggressive, sweeping purge inside China's military hierarchy.
State media outlets like Xinhua confirmed that the country's top political advisory body stripped Zhao of his key positions, including his seat on the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Beijing offered no explicit reason for the sudden axing. Analysts watching Chinese politics know the pattern well. The Shadow of Doklam and Galwan
If you want to understand why Zhao mattered, look at the border maps. He became the first commander of the newly restructured Western Theatre Command back in 2016, managing operations across Tibet, Xinjiang, and the entire contested frontier with India.
That placement put him at the center of two major military crises.

Intelligence assessments from Western agencies leaked shortly after the Galwan skirmish alleged that Zhao personally authorized the offensive.
