Hungary spent generations straightening its rivers. They took winding, meandering ribbons of life and forced them into rigid, stone-lined canals. They built dikes, drainage systems, and sluice gates, all designed with a single, uncompromising goal: push the water out, push it fast, and make way for the plow.

The swamps receded, replaced by miles of monoculture agriculture. Wheat and corn surged from the newly dried sediment. But moisture has a long memory, and ecosystems do not surrender their foundational elements without a ledger. By draining the wetlands to maximize immediate agricultural output, the region severed its own ecological life support system.
