It is all a comforting performance. And it is completely useless.
Spend enough time tracking urban watershed management and you realize that pulling fifty bags of plastic bottles out of a mudbank on a Saturday morning changes nothing about the health of that ecosystem. It is cosmetic theater. We are treating terminal cancer with a band-aid while the arterial bleeding continues upstream.
The Feel-Good Trap of Performative Stewardship
Every single year, millions of well-meaning people descend on shorelines, parks, and waterways to pick up garbage. They collect crisp packets, aluminum cans, and grocery bags. They weigh the haul at the end of the day and celebrate the total tonnage.

Stop measuring environmental impact by the number of garbage bags filled. Measure it by policy changes enacted, industrial discharge limits lowered, and cubic meters of untreated sewage kept out of the current.
Leave the trash pickers at home. Go to the budget meeting.
