Forcing a heavy, boxy, high-center-of-gravity chassis to lumber into a river is an exercise in engineering hubris.

The Physics Problem Nobody Wants to Discuss

Imagine a scenario where you take a commercial transit chassis weighing twelve tons, add marine outdrives, redundant bilge pumps, heavy-duty waterproof bulkheads, and compliance gear for two entirely different regulatory bodies. What do you get? A vessel that floats with the grace of a brick and drives with the agility of an oil tanker.

The core argument for amphibious tourist transport relies on convenience. The pitch claims passengers save time by rolling straight from the street into the harbor without changing vehicles. This is a false economy. Every minute saved at the boat ramp is paid back tenfold in mechanical downtime. Saltwater corrosion is merciless on heavy-duty steel bus frames. Braking systems, wheel bearings, and electrical wiring harnesses designed for dry roads corrode at an accelerated rate when repeatedly submerged in brackish urban waterways.

Maintenance logs from operators worldwide tell a brutal story. These vehicles spend more time on hydraulic lifts in repair depots than they do generating fare revenue. When you double the operational environment, you quadruple the failure points.

Regulatory Purgatory

The average transport planner forgets that an amphibious vehicle does not answer to a single master. On the tarmac, it must comply with strict motor vehicle safety standards, emission caps, axle weight limits, and crashworthiness protocols. Dedicated ferries move larger passenger volumes at higher speeds with lower fuel consumption per capita. Dedicated buses maintain their lightweight structural integrity without carrying dead weight in marine hardware.

We do not need hybrid novelties that try to be everything to everyone and end up being nothing to anyone. We need boring, reliable, single-purpose infrastructure that actually works on schedule.
